Generic Bactrim is used to treat the different types of bacterial infections. It is the antibiotic medicine that uses the combination of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole to fight against the bacterial infections in your body. It is used to treat respiratory infections like bronchitis;urinary tract infections;intestinal infections like traveler's diarrhea;or ear infections like acute otitis media. It is also used to prevent or treat a certain type of pneumonia. Whoever has used the generic Bactrim pills has achieved the relief from the bacterial infection problem. BACTRIM is also used to treat melioidosis and Whipple's disease caused by different bacteria.

Generic Bactrim is the combination of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole that destroys the bacterial infections in your body. It blocks two consecutive steps in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins essential to bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial synthesis of Dihydrofolic acid that is necessary for the multiplication of bacteria. This way the spread of the bacteria is completely stopped. But, Sulfamethoxazole in not able to destroy the bacterial colonies. Thus, the need for the other element in the combination arises. Here Trimethoprim plays a role;it blocks the production of Tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the required enzyme, Dihydrofolate reductase.

Thus, the production of proteins essential for the growth of bacteria is stopped. This way the bacteria get starved and ultimately they die due to this. Please note that generic BACTRIM treats only the bacterial infections. It will not show any effect on viral or fungal infections.

For adults, generic Bactrim dose is prescribed as 1 tablet in a day. It is given 8 mg/kg of trimethoprim to 40 mg/kg once in a day as prescribed dosage in the pediatric patients. Its dosage can be increased depending upon the stage of the bacterial infection and the individual requirements. Dosage of this antibiotic drug is different for the different infections.

Generic Bactrim dose is 2 tablets once in day or double strength single tablet in a day is taken, if the patient is suffering urinary infections. In case of severe bacterial infections, dose can be increased to two double strengths tablets twice times in a day. Its dosage of 1 tablet twice in a day for 10 days is prescribed if the person is suffering from bacterial infections in intestines. In travelers' diarrhea, the usual adult dosage of this antibiotic medication is 1 double strength tablet every 12 hours for 5 days. For the treatment of bronchitis the dosage of this medication is 1 double strength tablet for 14 days.

Take this medication on an empty stomach, 1 hour before the lunch, or 2 to 3 hours after the lunch. Take generic Bactrim after lunch if it upsets your stomach. Dosage of this antibiotic medication should be taken always with a full glass of water. Swallow this drug as whole, do not squeeze, masticate, or break them. Get the doctor's advice about increasing the dosage of this antibiotic medication, if you don't get the results by the recommended by the doctor.

Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, faster heartbeat, convulsions or hives, and difficulty in urinating are the serious side effects noted due to the intake of the generic Bactrim. Don't worry about these side effects as they are noted very rarely.

Common side effects like nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, headache, muscle ache, tiredness, depression, ringing in your ears, and dizziness are the side effects that are commonly observed after the intake of the generic Bactrim. These side effects are majority of the times noted to be momentary and they disappear as your body gets used to the dosage of this medication.

  • Prescribing generic Bactrim in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
  • The possibility of infections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy of this medications. If infections occur, this antibiotic drug should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.
  • This medication should be given with special care to the elderly patients. Lower doses of are advised to the elderly patients.
  • Please take this if you are suffering from the anemia caused by folic acid deficiency.
  • Avoid this if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole or any other antibiotics like penicillin, oxacillin, or dicloxacillin. Please take the doctor's advice regarding the intake of BACTRIM.
  • Please consult your doctor regarding the dosage of this medication, if you are suffering or previously had suffered from a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, asthma, diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics, kidney disease, AIDS, or liver disease.
  • Bactrim is the FDA pregnancy category C. It means that if pregnant women take this medicine, it will harm to the unborn baby. Intake of BACTRIM should be strictly avoided during the pregnancy because intake of BACTRIM may result into birth defects.
  • Breast-feeding women should avoid the intake of BACTRIM because it can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. The choice should be made by the mother whether to stop the dosage of BACTRIM or to continue breast feeding the child.
  • Please tell to your doctor before starting the dosage of this antibiotic if you have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency).
  • Generic Bactrim has not been approved for use by children younger than 2 months.
  • Don't take this antibacterial drug for the more duration than the period given by the doctor because it may cause severe health problems.
  • If the symptoms do not get better within a few days or if they become worse after taking this medicine for as per the prescribed dose then please check with your doctor.
